About Osteopathy

Osteopaths treat many different conditions despite the fact that many people think we only treat back pain.

Osteopathy is a safe manual therapy which is based on the principle that for your body to work well all parts must work together in order to function correctly. Practitioners use extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology to diagnose/treat problems with joints, muscles, nerves and ligaments.

All osteopaths must study for a minimum of four years at degree level. By law anyone using the title "Osteopath" must also be registered with the General Osteopathic Council.

Osteopaths use a varied range of safe, gentle techniques including soft tissue massage, joint manipulation (high velocity thrust) and stretching to decrease pain/swelling/muscle tension and increase the range of movement. Where manipulation is involved you can often hear an audible "click", this is perfectly normal and is not painful. In addition to treatment your osteopath will offer advice on posture, exercise and any other lifestyle factors they feel may be contributing to your condition.
